At the piano we can learn how to play music you love, how to freely improvise (through a practical use of theoretical knowledge of music) and how to write musical thoughs you may have. I am Francesca, 31, italian, i had a strong classical training, and after my academic piano studies i needed to open to jazz and songwriting. My will is to offer a comprehensive and pleasurable approach to music, and to keep the focus on the needs and desires that bring my student close to the piano.

It is never too late to start or resume learning piano! My teaching experience makes me a witness to this. Perhaps you came looking for piano lessons because you wish to be able to play some particular pieces, or to develop specific skills. Or maybe you don't know what your goal is yet, but are fond of the sound of the piano and want to dive into this wonderful instrument. Whatever the case, I am looking forward to hearing from you and discussing your next step! I try as much as possible to tailor the work with each individual student aiming at the goals set and the student's musical tastes. This becomes more the case the higher the student's level of experience. Nevertheless, beginners are also encouraged to suggest music for themselves to learn. The work on pieces is combined with other important activities designed to develop finger dexterity, hand coordination, rhythmic sense, music reading, playing by ear, etc. The Cortot, Hanon and scale exercises are some of my frequent choices for the technical work. For young beginners, I defend a no-book approach during the first 2 or 3 months, for three main reasons: it makes learning more fun, it unlocks our creative potential and it allows us to explore the instrument rather confidently and freely. Instead of learning how to read right from the start, students have the opportunity to play games, listen to music, sing, compose, and improvise over backing tracks, developing the core skills necessary for any musical activity later on. After this period, it is then time to introduce them to a method book. The one I recommend the most is Piano Safari. For teenage and adult beginners, the activities described above are selected and adjusted, and theory concepts may be introduced at an earlier stage. If desired, graded level series such as the RSL Classical or Contemporary Piano, among others, may be opted for. My piano lessons are built around one goal: awakening a genuine desire to explore music, and above all, helping each student develop their own taste for musical expression and the technical tools to master them, both mechanical and mental. Music is a unique challenge that gives us a new way of seeing ourselves, teaching patience, self-belief, and problem-solving along the way. This class is for anyone who wants to get into piano or for getting their kids into piano. I teach in a relaxed but thorough way to help build skills for the independent student. No previous knowledge is required and we we learn a broad range of musical skills from the more traditional music reading and comprehension to the more modern jazz piano and reading chord symbols. My focus will be creating sustainable learning by creating a personalized and enjoyable plan for each student. Classes are taught in English but also speak moderate Portuguese to help if needed.

I am a piano teacher with a specialized Master in Music Education and 19 years of teaching experience, in official music conservatoires, academies and private lessons. I am currently doing my PhD in Musical Sciences: Teaching and Psychology of Music. I also have a Master in Music: Piano, and a Postgraduation in Music in Childhood: Intervention and Research. I teach for all levels, from children starting from zero to students who want to prepare certifications at the Conservatories, passing through amateurs or simply curious of any age. I firmly believe in the importance of knowing how to read music and this is exactly what I teach first, obviously adapting the method to the age of my students: knowing how to read music is knowing one more language, which, if learned well, won’t ever be forgotten (like riding a bicycle!) and it is an invaluable wealth. Starting from that point I teach the position of the hand, the arm and the whole body at the piano, the fundamentals of the piano technique (giving great importance to the percussive movement of the finger and the distribution of weight), the understanding of musical language, the expression of the personality through the keyboard, the search for touch and knowledge of piano repertoire.

Welcome to my piano teaching studio! I am a professional pianist offering private piano and theory lessons for students of all levels. As a pianist with over 14 years of teaching experience in Europe and the USA, as well as over 23 years of playing/performing, I enjoy motivating my students with music of their own preferred style and interest, whether that be classical or contemporary. My main goal is to promote a positive experience and love for music-making during the learning process. If the student is interested in a more structured approach, I guide preparation for grades 1-8 of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) piano and music theory exams where my students consistently receive highest marks. I also have successful experience preparing students for conservatory entrance auditions, masterclasses, and competitions in the Europe, the USA, India, and Canada. We have class concerts at Pianos Maene for interested students twice per year. I am happy to provide either a more relaxed or a serious approach to learning piano, we simply need to discuss the personal goals and preferences of each student. My own studies are as follows: I have obtained two postgraduate performance degrees at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp: "Concertsoloist" in Piano Performance and "Chamber Music” (under the guidance of esteemed professor Sergei Edelmann). Prior to this, I received my Bachelor and Masters degrees in Piano Performance/Music from the University of Minnesota - Minneapolis (with Prof. Lydia Artymiw) and Texas Christian University, Fort Worth (with Dr. Tamas Ungar). My experience includes collaboration with many different instrumentalists and singers, performing as a soloist and collaborative member in several orchestras, and receiving top prizes in several competitions. While maintaining my performance and recording career in Belgium at present, I am developing my private music studio in central Antwerp and look forward to meeting new students.
