You'll learn how to build effortless bow control, improve finger agility, master vibrato, and approach classical repertoire or orchestral/chamber music excerpts with confidence—all while maintaining a relaxed, healthy posture to prevent tension.

I am passionate about pedagogy, methodology, and finding the right approach for the right student. With over 20 years of teaching experience across a variety of formats (private lessons, group classes, chamber music coaching, orchestra sectionals, etc.), and having taught in over 25 countries to a wide range of cultures, I love the puzzle of finding the right approach for each and every student I work with. It's vitally important to me to find the right explanation, technique, or exercise to help set my students up for success--not only to give them the right tools for their approach, but to also help them feel empowered to grow as a musician.

My teaching is entirely tailored to each student's needs. I can offer both structured instruction with a progressive program and more flexible support, based on the pieces the student wishes to learn. I am always open to musical suggestions and particularly enjoy working on a repertoire chosen by the student. I am convinced that consistency is the key to progress: moving forward step by step allows you to develop true musicality as well as self-confidence. There is no mandatory commitment, but regular lessons and personal practice between sessions are strongly recommended for lasting progress. I have already helped many friends, colleagues, and students prepare for exams, competitions, and other musical goals. Having participated in numerous competitions myself, I know what they require and how to prepare effectively. Thanks to my training in the French musical tradition, I bring an open and versatile approach, which can enrichingly complement more academic teaching methods. Above all, my goal is to pass on my passion for music and to support each student in their own musical journey, with kindness, high standards and enjoyment.

This class introduces students to the fundamentals of playing the viola and violin in a supportive, beginner-friendly environment. Students will learn how to properly hold and care for the instrument, develop basic bowing techniques, and begin reading simple music notation. As a beginner, we envelope the simple factors that go into making a beautiful piece, and find ways to feel confident within our selves and our playing skills. Starting from scratch and building the foundation of your playing is crucial during this era of learning, and with constant practice, time, and patience, we can overcome any obstacle in music together. Students in intermediate/advanced classes will have a heavier workload and more commitment to their lessons as well as tasks provided afterwards such as to-do lists and practice logs. These students are to be prepared 100% of the time with preparing their repertoire prior to the lesson, and maintaining their practice log accordingly.

How do you learn and what are your goals in learning music? I aim to make learning music as interesting and accessible as possible. I use a scaffolded approach to teaching that pairs physically sustainable playing techniques (Alexander Technique) with built-upon previous knowledge and interests. I hold MM and BM degrees from New York University and The University of Iowa and studied with Melissa White and Gregory Fulkerson for the entirety of my Masters of Music at New York University. I am a violinist and violist currently living and working in New York City. I have played in such venues as Lincoln Center Summer Stages, Carnegie Hall, Duomo di Orvieto, among others. I grew up playing bluegrass with my parents and now genre-hop among traditional classical music, contemporary classical, pop, singer-songwriter, musical theater, jazz, avant-garde, and folk. For these reasons and more, I enjoy tailoring the repertoire and technique education to the student's goals and interests. I have taught 3 year olds, elementary kids, high schoolers, college students, and adult learners, and enjoyed all within the age range for various reasons.

Hello! I am a Long Island-based viola and violin teacher currently working towards a Master's degree in viola performance at Stony Brook University. I have taught more than a dozen violin and viola students ages 6-70 over the past 5 years, and I continue to maintain a hybrid studio in Northern Virginia in addition to lessons online and on Long Island. I hold a Bachelor of Music degree in viola from the Peabody Institute of Music in Baltimore. I care deeply about the quality of my lessons, and I continuously improve my teaching materials to meet the needs of each student and to reflect each new insight I gain about string playing. My approach in lessons is based on having a long term plan for each student of becoming an excellent all-around musician, while achieving satisfying results in the short term. The most important skill I focus on with every student, young and old, is being able to analyze a technical or musical problem, break it down into a set of realistic steps, and work with efficiency to gain and retain the results. In other words: understanding how to practice in a rewarding but challenging way. In my viola and violin lessons, music theory work is vital to making musical progress, whether through understanding chords and tonal harmony, or simply reading music fluently. I was the recipient of the Azalia H. Thomas Prize for Music Theory in my graduating class at Peabody, and I regularly compose and arrange music for my students and peers. I am glad to teach theory and composition independently of instrumental instruction for interested students, but know that if you would like to study an instrument with me, you will build a great base knowledge of theory.

His solo performing experiences are worldwide including, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Scheonberg Hall, Crowell Hall, Merkin Hall (USA), Walter Hall (Canada), Sejong Center for the Arts (Korea), Municipal Teatro de Cali (Columbia), Talac Convention Center (Philippine). Many of his students have been accepted to prestigious music schools including, Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Eastman School of Music, USC, UCLA. Every year he prepares many Non-Music Major students for their college credential to be accepted colleges including, Harvard, MIT, Wellesley, Yale, UC Berkeley, and Columbia.
